What Others are Saying

Finally, to keep the gardener organized, a local gardener, Gail Holmen, has created the Green Thumb notebook. Divided into five sections, this handy tool will help the gardener keep track of what is planted where as well as supply timely advice. I like the color wheel, which is hard to come by in most garden resources.

A lot of gardeners dream about keeping a garden journal that will organize their seed packets, landscaping drawings, plant information, magazine clippings and the other things we seem to amass. But most folks don’t ever get around to actually putting one together. Organizational specialist Gail Holmen, who lives and gardens in Tiburon, has made it easy by pulling together a three-ring binder ‘system’ to collect all this stuff.

BEST ORGANIZER

All together now. If you've made a resolution to be more organized about your garden record-keeping this year, here's a product that will help. " My Green Thumb: Your Gardening Organizer" is a three-ring binder with places to list gardening goals, keep a journal, organize photos, plot a planting plan, make notes of favorite plants and garden centers, make nursery shopping lists and much more. There's a monthly calendar of suggested garden activities, a list of poison plants, a watering guide and clear plastic sleeves for saving seed packets.

My Green Thumb, a gardening organizer, has just been released by author Gail Holmen of Tiburon—right in time for holiday gift giving. “My Green Thumb,” she says, provides an organizational framework for gardeners to chronicle and manage their garden’s performance over time, as well as providing key gardening resources, tools and templates.

Getting organized: Here's an easy way to cross "getting organized" off your list of New Year's resolutions. Stop by Corrick's in Santa Rosa or Tuscan Gardens in Petaluma and pick up a copy of Gail Holmen's garden organizer notebook, "My Green Thumb." One of the most useful sections is the planting journal where you can record what was planted where and when, how each bed performed, and what changes you want to make next year. If you don't have your own organizational system, this one's a big help.

The new year often inspires gardeners to organize everything from their ideas and dreams to photographs and lists of what's planted, not to mention notes on successes and failures. This organizer, a three-ring binder and loose-leaf pages of paper and plastic, offers gardeners a pleasant way to save and then find information about their landscape. The organizer is neatly divided into five sections that allow a homeowner room to record the progress of the landscape, write down goals, list favorite plants, evaluate projects and remember activities. It also has space for writing down thoughts and ideas for the future. I especially like the plastic pages, which are sleeves the author recommends for clippings and memorabilia. I think they would also be good for the myriad of plant tags loaded with important information that you wind up with after planting a bed. The author has special paper pages designated for these tags, as well.

My Green Thumb is a handy organizer for contemporary gardeners, a logical repository for all the stuff gardeners collect, from notes on where to move plants next spring, to all those plastic plant sticks and photos that fall out of other garden journals.”
